Aikido - Harmony Through Budo

O'Sensei
Morihei Ueshiba
Our Aikido classes are offered through Takemusu Aikido New Mexico (TANM), ensuring instruction rooted in authentic budo tradition and effective self‑defense.
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art rooted in the traditions of budo, the martial way. Developed by O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century, Aikido was designed as an effective system of self‑defense that draws on centuries of Japanese combat practice. While it avoids unnecessary brutality, Aikido is not simply about philosophy—it is a practical martial discipline that teaches control, precision, and the ability to neutralize an opponent decisively.

Training emphasizes throws, pins, and joint locks that allow a practitioner to subdue an attacker regardless of size or strength. The techniques are based on timing, positioning, and leverage, making them highly effective in real‑world situations. Students learn to move with confidence, maintain balance under pressure, and apply techniques that can end a confrontation quickly and safely. Weapons practice with the wooden sword (bokken), staff (jo), and knife (tanto) further develops awareness, distance, and martial readiness.

Aikido is not a sport—it is a budo discipline. The dojo is a place where students cultivate discipline, respect, and resilience while training in methods that are both traditional and practical. The art demands commitment and sharpens both body and mind, preparing practitioners to respond effectively to aggression while embodying the spirit of martial training.

At TANM, Aikido is taught as a complete martial system. Students gain practical self‑defense skills, improve fitness and coordination, and develop the mindset of budo: calm under pressure, decisive in action, and respectful in conduct. Whether you are new to martial arts or an experienced practitioner, Aikido offers a path to strength, confidence, and mastery.
